About Terassikeli
What is Terassikeli?
Terassikeli is a map that shows which terraces are in the sun right now and for how long. You can filter terraces by tap list, price level or cocktails, and scrub time forward to plan the evening.
Is Terassikeli free?
Yes. Terassikeli is completely free, with no ads and no tracking cookies. If you like it, you can support the project from the link at the top of this page.
How is the sun data computed?
For every terrace we compute the sun path and the shadows of the surrounding buildings from open city building data. Street and park tree shadows are estimated from tree registers where available. Cloud cover comes from the hourly forecast, so "sunny now" accounts for the weather.
The model does not know about backyard trees, awnings or parasols, so conditions on site may differ.
How often is the data updated?
The weather and sun situation update hourly from the forecast. Terrace details and building data are refreshed less often, as the open sources update.
Where does the data come from?
Terraces come from the Helsinki terrace permit register and OpenStreetMap. Building heights come from open city data and the National Land Survey of Finland; weather from Open-Meteo. Sources and licenses:

What does "terassikeli" mean?
"Terassikeli" is a Finnish word for weather that tempts you onto a terrace — sunny and warm. In Finland the best terrace weather usually runs from May to September, though a sunny, sheltered terrace can be pleasant earlier too.
Spotted an error?
The data comes from open registers and is not always up to date. If a detail is wrong, use the "Report an error" link on the terrace page. For a missing terrace or anything else, use the Feedback link in the page footer. You can also vote and comment on a terrace page.
Can I use Terassikeli on my phone?
Yes. Terassikeli runs in the browser on both phone and desktop — no separate app is needed. You can add the page to your phone home screen as a shortcut.
